I downloaded a few books from a free site, and the books are opened on my computer with Adobe Digital editions (which I had to download to view them). When I was starting the download it gave the option to have them sent to my Kindle, but since I own a Nook, I used the 'save to desktop' option.
How do I transfer the books onto my Nook? It's listing the file with a .acsm extension if that helps.

Go to Barnes & Noble and have them show you how. The reason I bought the Nook instead of the Kindle is to be able to go to a store and ask questions.

@Maggie
Why not just answer the person instead of directing them to another site? This group is for talking about the nook and helping one another out. Kinda defeats the purpose of even having it if people are just told to go elsewhere. =
@Stacia
Loading books on the nook is SUPER easy. Just plug it into your computer and it'll show the folders of your nook like a flash drive. Pick out the folder My Documents and just drop the files in there. Once you are done, just eject the nook (by clicking the little icon on the task bar of your computer.) Go to your library on the nook and to My Documents and you should see them there - after the nook scans for new media.
Feel free to ask more questions here if it doesn't work or if you are confused.

Did step 1, plugged in and dragged the book file into the My Documents folder onto the drive.
Did the safe hardware/eject thing. Did the search for new content manually. Checked the 'View my Documents' area, checked the music folder, even scrolled through my library. Nothing. Even did a full reboot and enabled Wifi and tried again.
What am I missing here? Is it because the file is an adobe file and the other books are EPUB? Do I need to convert the file?

I think the problem is that your book is saved as an ACSM file. The Nook accepts EPUB, PDB, and PDF files. There is a site called Calibre where you can convert files. I haven't used it personally, but many people say that it is really easy to use. Maybe you should try this one out?

That's what I was thinking. I'll check it out and see if that works.
Thanks for all the help so far.

Rick wrote: 'Calibre can convert almost any format of ebooks, but they cannot be encrypted. I believe (I def COULD be wrong here) that ACSM is Adobe DRM-encryption. What I would suggest to Stacia is to go back ...'
I think that you're probably right.
So yeah. I just messed around with Calibre and I think that it will come in handy for other formats, but not this particular one.
I'm guessing because a couple of these books are advanced copies they're locked down. The only reason why I was hoping I'd be able to convert them is because the site had an offering for Kindle users.
Oh well, it's too bad. I was hoping not to have to sit on my computer to read them.

When I download books (.acsm) using Adobe Digital Editions (library books), I then plug in my nook, and wait for it to show up in the file structure on the left side of the Adobe Digital Editions desktop/program. Then I drag the book, within Adobe Digital Editions, to the nook icon on the left, and it is side loaded to the nook. Then I follow the safe eject/disconnect thing. I don't use Calibre at all when I'm transferring .acsm books to my nook. Are you getting the books through Overdrive? There are much clearer explanations than mine for using Adobe Digital Editions at the bn website.

Angela is right. I use Digital Editions all the time to put library eBooks on my nook. I usually just double-click the ascm file and it opens in Adobe Digital Editions with the new book now available under 'All Items'. Plug in your nook and after a few seconds you'll see 'nook' added to the left sidebar. Click and drag the book from 'All Items' to 'nook' and it copies it to the nook.

Stacia, I feel your pain. I also had trouble putting books on my Nook. Calibre helped a great deal,I still have some that don't convert over. I do think it's mostly my fault because of my lack of computer knowledge. Tonight I'm going to a Nook class at my local B&N to get help. Maybe I'll be able to help you after the class.

I think you have to tell authorize adobe files for the nook each time. At least I did.

FYI: .acsm files are not eBooks. They are links to eBooks on the Adobe servers. So you have to download the .acsm file, open it in Adobe Digital Editions, and transfer it to your Nook. If you haven't yet authorized your Nook in ADE, you'll need to do that before you move the book. Plug your nook in BEFORE you Open ADE, it will see it and ask you to authorize. Then you can move any books you can get via ADE (overdrive Library books, Sony eBooks, Kobo ebooks, too) onto your Nook.

Thanks for the additional comments. I will try this later tonight when I have time and hopefully have better luck!

Ok, so I got the books onto my Nook and was able to load them from the My Documents tab.
Thanks for the help from everyone that was patient enough to work with me!

Three cheers for this group and this thread. Even after downloading, installing, and tinkering with ADE...I couldn't figure out why my sideloaded overdrive title wasn't letting me read on my Nook. Then I found this and sideloaded the title THE RIGHT WAY! Go me. Now if I could just get the book read before the due date.

Just an after comment. I've found that just dragging the books into the My Documents folder on the nook drive does not always make them available for some reason. Using Calibre or ADE is really the way to go. Calibre seems to take up quite a bit of my memory, but one at a time seems to be alright, and it does manga!

Thanks for posting about Calibre. I will have to look into that.

So I seem to have a problem. I am trying to sideload from ADE and I have gotten the book on there but I can't seem to authorize my Nook on ADE. Anybody have another suggestion on how to do this.

Never mind I found it on the Adobe forums. And I will put it here for future reference for other people
It seems that my nook already had a ADE file and for some reason wouldn't recognize it. So what I did was delete the file and then unplug my Nook and plugged it back in and started ADE all of a sudden it recognized it on the computer and asked if I wanted to authorize it.

i just bought a nook. but now i'm lost. i have books downloaded for my sony ereader. how do i put those books on my nook? how can i download other free books? and what about library books? everything i download goes my reader library that i use for my sony ereader, but when i plug in my nook, it's not picked up but the reader library. can someone please help me?

Do you have adobe digital editions on your computer? If not download that and import all your books into that. It is a great way to organize your ebooks. If you plug in your Nook it should show up and then all you need to do is drag the book over to the left side where the nook is listed. When I download library books I do the same.

i do. and nook shows up, but when i disconnect my nook, i can't locate the books

I don't know what format Sony eReader uses but you can always format with Calibre.
Also try just completely restarting the nook. Sometimes it's goofy like that. Also click the update button in your library.

stephanie wrote: 'How do u restart it'
You restart it by depressing the button on the top of the Nook and holding it for a few seconds until the screen goes blank. You turn it back on the same way. It will take a minute to show up.
Whenever I have downloaded books from another source, they are stored in 'My Documents'. If you press the library icon on the touch pad, you will see a selection in the menu that says 'View My Documents'. If you select that, you should be able to see your books.

You're welcome. Also, when downloading books from other sources than B&N, make sure they're in EPUB format. There's a free program that will convert them called 'Calibre', that someone mentioned above.

On the Nook itself, on the library screen touch the my documents list. It won't show up on the B & N list. Also check to see that you have a folder on the nook called My Documents (when your nook is attached to computer)Usually it goes into that spot when you use Adobe digital editions.
Oops I should have read further down you already got that answer.

So I downloaded Calibre and I was able to get the items to display on my Nook under the My Documents section, but whenever I try to open them I get a message that says User Not Activated. Does anyone know what this means?
Originally the books were from Netgalley and I believe they are .acsm files

I've found that the Nook likes ePub better than PDF. I converted a lot of books using Calibre (LOVE by the way) and when I loaded them only half of the books showed up or only part of a book showed up. But once I converted them to ePub from PDF I had no problem. All the books (about 100) went to my Nook with no missing parts or books.

I was able to figure it out with some help from one of my friends. I had to activate my Nook with Adobe Digital Editions. Now I can view the books with no problem!

I have had my nook for several months now and have never had a problem uploading books or syncing it with my phone until today. I downloaded a few of the free classics here on goodreads (in epub format) and transferred them to my nook library. They show up when I open the folder on my computer, but even after 'searching for new content' and turning it off and back on again I can't get them to show in my library.
Do they have to be placed in my 'my documents' folder, even if they are the proper folder? If so this is something I hope they fix in later software editions, because personally, I don't want TWO libraries on my nook!
Please tell me I'm doing something wrong and that they do not have to go in the 'my documents' folder.

Alas, I was right, the books have to be in my documents to show up, even though they are epub files. I'm hoping they make the organization a little easier with the upcoming software update later this month.

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I have been trying to figure this out for days. Your explanation was so simple!

Soo. I'm having some issues. I'm trying to download the first James Potter book onto my nook. I'm downloading it directly from goodreads and it's a .epub book. So I figured if I followed the steps you said earlier it would work. It didn't. The book hasn't shown up anywhere on my nook.

Never mind me :D I just turned in on and off again and wallah! It worked xD Sorry for that everyone.

I just bought a book from the website and I did the steps to get the book that I bought onto my nook, but now the book isn't showing up in my nook...did I do something wrong? can someone please answer this for me?

I have a question. I have downloaded books from 4shared and since I don't take my laptop everywhere with me and can't really read those books a lot I was wondering if I get a nook that would solve the problem. I am new to the whole idea of the e-book and I don't really know how it works so could you please tell me if the nook would download those books. Thank you.

It depends what format the books are in. If they are in epub or pdf, the nook can read them. Or if they are DRM-free, you could use the free software 'calibre' to convert them to a format the nook can read.
I haven't used 4shared, but I'd guess from looking at it that the files are drm-free.

I have a question about downloading library books to a Nook. I am a public librarian and was trying to help someone download books onto her Nook. It seemed to work but now she is getting 'user not activated' messages when she opens the books. Is this because my Adobe Digital Editions is registered to one id and her nook is registered to another? Any help here?

Lily wrote: 'I have a question about downloading library books to a Nook. I am a public librarian and was trying to help someone download books onto her Nook. It seemed to work but now she is getting 'user no...'
Probably. When I sideload books onto my Nook, I have to use Digital Adobe and it registers my Nook.

Lily,
If you look back on this thread, to Bree's response, you will get the answer. I assume you are using Adobe Digital Editions. When you first down load ADE, you will be asked a question something like: 'Do you want to authorize ADE?' If you decline, then you will still be able to read the library books on ADE, but it will not sideload to your Nook. This is ADE.
Can you authorize after wards? Yes. To authorize ADE on your computer, go to Library-->Authorize Computer. If you do not have and ADE account already, you can set one up now. By the way, at times ADE/Adobe has been funky and I have had to restore ADE for it to recognize it is now authorized.

How To Download Library Books To My Nook

I didn't see this thread before and I just got home from B&N to ask them if I can download a book from a different site. I told him I had the Nook Simple Touch. His reply was 'yes but you need to use the computer cable.' I asked him how do I do it. He again told me I have to use the cable and hook it to the computer. I then said yes I understand that but how do I get the book from the site into the nook once the cable is hooked up. He told me to just download it on the computer, hook up the nook and once you see the file just drop your book in there. He called it 'the old fashion way'. He never told me there were different extensions, never said a word about only some books can be done that way and others need programs to convert them. Nothing about authorizing ADE. I just got home and was thinking I can do any book including library books and kindle books. Thank goodness I saw this thread in my mail (Thank you Gary!) since I am new to this Gary's comment made the notice go to my mail about this thread.
Now I want to thank you all for doing this because I did go to the store where I bought my Nook (yes it was B&N) and I was misled and given incomplete information which just shows you how important this group is and how referring someone back to the store they bought their Nook in is not the best answer. Again, thank you all!!!

I hope I'm not repeating an already posted question. I've borrowed books from my library and added them to my nook via ADE. However, if there is any art on a page, I can not read that page on my nook. There have been two books now - one I'm currently trying to read is Catch & Release By Blythe Woolston. The beginning of each chpt has artwork and the words emerge on the page. My nook want pick it up. Any suggestions?
